The Lost City of the Monkey God
In 2012, a lidar survey of an unexplored valley deep in the Mosquitia rainforest of Honduras revealed the existence of a large, previously unknown Pre-Columbian city. The site was not Maya, but built by a mysterious people who were influenced by the Maya and probably had a connection to Copan. A joint Honduran-American ground expedition in 2015 surveyed the extensive ruins and made wonderful discoveries and was followed by a limited excavation in 2016 and 2017. Preston accompanied the expeditions and wrote about the finds in The New Yorker, National Geographic, and later in his #1 bestselling nonfiction book, The Lost City of the Monkey God. During the presentation, Preston will show slides and video from the several expeditions that found and explored this major archaeological site, hidden in one of the last scientifically unexplored regions in Central America.
