Nonstructure 4-N, noncultural
About this Nonstructure
General Location
Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom.
Specific Location
South of Structure 1 and southwest of Nonstructure 1-N.
Selection Criteria
Part of midden testing program that attempted to link midden areas with specific, datable structures. Nonstructure 4-N is an area spatially associated with Structure 1, a tested kiva. The boundaries of this study area were arbitrarily defined by estimating the probable location of trash from Structure 1. Four 1-x-1-m excavation units were selected using a random numbers program. In addition, two 1-x-1-m judgmental units (Segments 1 and 2) were opened north of the random units in hopes of finding midden deposits that were in situ and more substantial than the deposits found in the random units. A total of seven cultural deposits, including secondary refuse and extramural surfaces with associated features, were exposed. Each cultural deposit was assigned a unique study unit number (Nonstructures 4.1-N - 4.7-N). Noncultural deposits are grouped with this study unit (Nonstructure 4-N).

Excavation Unit
51
Location
Segment 1 N E.
(1- x- 1- m)
Lower west side.
North part of Nonstructure 4; roughly 2 m south of the masonry wall that defines the south boundary of the Structure 1 kiva and associated courtyard.
Selection Criteria
Judgmental. This unit was placed upslope of all the random units in Nonstructure 4 to look for thicker secondary refuse deposits.
Excavation Strategy
Strata subdivided into arbitrary levels.
Unit Ends at
Undisturbed native sediment.

Excavation Unit
52
Location
Segment 2 N E.
(1- x- 1- m)
Lower west side.
North part of Nonstructure 4; immediatley south of a suspected retaining wall which defines the south boundary of Structure 1.
Selection Criteria
Judgmental. This unit was placed upslope of all the random units in Nonstructure 4 to look for thicker secondary refuse deposits and to expose the suspected retaining wall associated with Structure 1.
Excavation Strategy
Strata subdivided into arbitrary levels.
Unit Ends at
Undisturbed native sediment.
