Nonstructure 7-N, noncultural

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Upper west side; on a slope that is adjacent to and west of main drainage.

Specific Location

Below a ledge where Structure 8 (a tested kiva) and other buildings are located.

Selection Criteria

Part of midden testing program. Selected to increase sample of cultural remains from northwest quadrant of site. Nonstructure 7-N was originally defined as an area spatially associated with a kiva unit that includes Structure 8. All of the boundaries of this study unit were defined by natural features, such as cliff edges and boulders, with the exception of the western boundary. The western boundary was arbitrarily set by estimating where the edge of a trash area associated with the Structure 8 kiva unit would be. Four 1-x-1-m excavation units were selected using a random numbers program. After completing these units, the boundaries of Nonstructure 7-N were extended and three judgmental units were placed in the newly expanded area. The rationale for expanding Nonstructure 7-N was to increase the sample of artifacts from secondary refuse contexts. Excavations in these three judgmental units proved fruitful, as relatively thick, secondary refuse deposits were encountered. One of the judgmental excavation units (Segment 3) is quite a distance from the Structure 8 kiva unit and the secondary refuse deposits found in it probably did not come from there. A total of six cultural deposits, including in situ secondary refuse deposits and naturally redeposited secondary refuse deposits, were identified and assigned individual study unit numbers. All noncultural deposits were assigned to this study unit (Nonstructure 7-N).

Excavation Unit

43

Location

1-x-1 meter grid unit 441N 464E.
Adjacent to and west of main drainage; south of Structure 8, a kiva.
Below a ledge that Structure 8 and other buildings rest upon; just outside original boundary of Nonstructure 7; southwest of southwest corner of Nonstructure 7.

Selection Criteria

Judgmental. Selected in hopes of increasing the sample of artifacts from secondary refuse contexts in Nonstructure 7; specific location selected because there are boulders to the south that may have prevented refuse from eroding downslope.

Location

Segment 2 N E.
(1-x-1-m)
Adjacent to and west of main drainage; south of Structure 8, a kiva; north of a cliff edge.
East of original boundaries of Nonstructure 7; almost directly below the bench on which Structure 8 and associated structures were built.

Selection Criteria

Judgmental. Selected in hopes of increasing the sample of artifacts from secondary refuse contexts in Nonstructure 7; specific location selected because unit is almost directly below the bench on which Structure 8 and associated structures were built.

Excavation Unit

45

Location

Segment 3 N E.
(1-x-1-m)
Adjacent to and west of main drainage.
West of original boundaries of Nonstructure 7 approximately four meters south of the bench on which structures, including Structure 8, were built; southwest of Structure 8.

Selection Criteria

Judgmental. Selected in hopes of increasing the sample of artifacts from secondary refuse contexts in Nonstructre 7; refuse found in this unit could be associated with any of the structures on the bench, not just Structure 8.

Excavation Strategy

Strata subdivided into arbitrary levels.

Unit Ends at

Undisturbed native sediment. Excavation ended just below the top of sterile soil in most of the unit; auger testing encountered what is believed to be a layer decayed bedrock, followed by solid bedrock.
