Nonstructure 9-N, noncultural
About this Nonstructure
General Location
Located on canyon rim adjacent to, and within, the main drainages of the pueblo.
Specific Location
West of rim complex.
Selection Criteria
Three judgmental units were placed adjacent to or on top of four possible stone alignments that were visible at modern ground surface and were believed to be check dams. As stated in the Woods Canyon Pueblo research design, part of our research was aimed at identifying water control features and prehistoric fields used by the occupants of the pueblo. Our intent in exposing these possible check dams was to better understand their function, their construction, and their age. A total of four cultural deposits were identified, including extramural surfaces with associated check dams, and each deposit was assigned a unique study unit number (Nonstructures 9.1-N - 9.4-N). All noncultural deposits were grouped with this study unit, Nonstructure 9-N.

Excavation Details for Excavation Units
In order by excavation unit number.
Excavation Unit
65
Location
Segment 1 N E.
(Roughly 3-x-1 meters)
Located on canyon rim and in the main drainage of the pueblo.
Approximately 25 meters north of cliff edge; adjacent to and north of a check dam wall (F-1) that is visible at modern ground surface and runs perpendicular to the main drainage.
Selection Criteria
Judgmental. Selected to evaluate (1) the construction of a stone alignment, believed to be a check dam, and; (2) the sediment that accumulated behind the alignment.
Excavation Strategy
Strata subdivided into arbitrary levels.
Unit Ends at
Bedrock.

Location
Segment 2 N E.
(Roughly 2-x-1-meters)
Located on canyon rim, immediately east of the main drainage of the pueblo.
Adjacent to and north of a possible check dam wall that is visible at modern ground surface; located immediately east of a bedrock outcrop and west of a small bank of alluvial deposits.
Selection Criteria
Judgmental. Selected to evaluate: (1) the construction of a stone alignment believed to be a possible check dam, and; (2) the sediment that accumulated behind the supposed dam.
Excavation Strategy
Strata subdivided into arbitrary levels.
Unit Ends at
Bedrock.

Location
Segment 3 N E.
(Roughly 4-x-1-meters)
Located on canyon rim and on a bank immediately west of the main drainage of the pueblo.
South edge of excavation unit is approximately three meters from the cliff edge; adjacent to and north of a stone alignment (F-5) that is visible at modern ground surface.
Selection Criteria
Judgmental. Selected to evaluate: (1) the construction of two and possibly three stone alignments that are believed to be check dams, and; (2) the sediment that accumulated behind these supposed dams.
