Nonstructure 1216, extramural surface

About this Nonstructure

General Location

In the great tower complex

Specific Location

6 m southwest of the great tower bi-wall structure.

Selection Criteria

This surface was encountered during testing to further define an extramural wall along the west edge of the great tower complex.

Use

Outdoor use surface associated with the construction of a wall that formed the western boundary of an outdoor use area at the west end of this architectural block. This surface might thus have been used as a surface for work activities, or for social or religious gatherings.

Abandonment

Surface abandoned as a use surface when refuse accumulated on it.

Postabandonment Process

Sediment was deposited naturally above the refuse, and the uppermost portion of Feature 1 (wall:other) collapsed.

Dating of Construction

Surface was not constructed. A wall that was built on this use surface (Feature 1--Wall: other) is double-coursed-with-core, a masonry style that suggests construction during the Pueblo III period (A.D. 1150-1300). Pueblo III white painted sherds were associated with a surface beneath this surface (Nonstructure 1217), indicating that Nonstructure 1216 was used after A.D. 1100.

Dating of Abandonment

Abandoned as a use surface when refuse accumulated on top of it.

Date Range
