Nonstructure 1218, extramural surface

About this Nonstructure

Has Surface
No Masonry

General Location

In the great tower complex.

Specific Location

8.5 m east-southeast of the great tower.

Selection Criteria

This use surface was exposed during the search for refuse deposits south of the roomblock.

Use

This bedrock surface was used as the foundation for the construction of the roomblock in this architectural block. In this particular area, one masonry feature (Feature 1, Other) was constructed on this surface, and refuse (Nonstructure 1220) was deposited on it. It was probably also used as an outdoor work area.

Abandonment

Use as an outdoor work surface might have ended when residents began to deposit refuse on it.

Postabandonment Process

Not affected by these processes--was buried.

Dating of Construction

Surface not constructed, but the association of Mesa Verde Black-on-white sherds indicates that the surface was used after A.D. 1180.

Dating of Abandonment

Pueblo II and Pueblo III pottery sherds were left on this surface; the high proportion of Mesa Verde Black-on-white sherds indicates that the surface was used until late in the occupation of the village.
