Nonstructure 1223, extramural surface

About this Nonstructure

General Location

In the great tower complex.

Specific Location

8 m northeast of Structure 1210.

Selection Criteria

Surface was encountered during excavations to expose and document masonry wall (possible water-control feature associated with the great tower complex).

Use

Used as a surface on which to construct Feature 1 (wall:other), a masonry water control feature (probably a dam). Surface was probably also used to access water that would have accumulated behind (north of) the dam when runoff flowed down the drainage to the north.

Abandonment

Surface was covered by naturally-deposited sediments during the occupation of the adjacent roomblock.

Postabandonment Process

Another surface was used above it.

Dating of Construction

Surface was not constructed. This natural bedrock surface served as a foundation on which to build Feature 1 (wall:other). The types of pottery sherds in these deposits, and the pecked-block masonry style of the wall post-date A.D. 1180.

Dating of Abandonment

Surface was covered by naturally deposited sediments sometime during the occupation of the adjacent roomblock.
