Nonstructure 203, extramural surface

About this Nonstructure

Has Surface
No Masonry

General Location

South part of the site.

Specific Location

Along the north wall of the roomblock in Architectural Block 200.

Selection Criteria

This surface was encountered during excavations to expose the north wall of the adjacent roomblock.

Use

Outdoor use surface associated with the occupation of Architectural Block 200.

Abandonment

This surface was no longer used as a surface after refuse accumulated on it.

Postabandonment Process

Not affected by postabandonment processes, because it was buried.

Dating of Construction

This outdoor use surface was not constructed, but was used after the adjacent roomblock was constructed, and after Structure 204 (directly beneath this surface) filled with collapsed roofing material and other sediment. The fill of Structure 204 contains Mesa Verde Black-on-white sherds, which indicates that Nonstructure 203 was used sometime after A.D. 1180.

Dating of Abandonment

The association of Mesa Verde Black-on-white sherds with this surface and the presence of this pottery type in the 1.0 m of fill below it indicates that the surface was abandoned sometime after A.D. 1180.
