Nonstructure 705, extramural surface

About this Nonstructure

Has Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Central part of the site.

Specific Location

Just north of the roomblock in Architectural Block 700.

Selection Criteria

Surface was encountered during excavations to expose a segment of the outside face of the north wall of the roomblock.

Use

Outdoor use surface associated with construction and occupation of the roomblock in Architectural Block 700

Abandonment

Abandoned as a surface when refuse was deposited on it

Postabandonment Process

Wall fall, aeolian, and alluvial sediments accumulated above the refuse

Dating of Construction

Pecked-block masonry style of the structure that rests on this surface (Structure 706) suggests use during the Pueblo III period (A.D. 1150-1300).

Dating of Abandonment

No sherds were associated with this surface or below this surface (the surface is undisturbed native sediment). However, the presence of Mesa Verde Black-on-white pottery in the stratum just above this surface leads to the inference that the surface was not abandoned much before A.D. 1180, and might have been abandoned any time after that.

Date Range
