General description
Feature 1 consists of a dense concentration of rocks with artifacts on the surface the Block 200 west midden.
Use history
This rock concentration may be related to the stockade fence which runs north-south through the unit. It could represent an intentional effort to bolster the interior base of the fence or an inadvertant dump of refuse and rock up agains the fence.
Associated features
The rock concentration is on the west side of Nonstructure 248 stockade postholes (Features 1-24).
Excavation procedure
The feature was excavated with a trowel in north and south halves. It was excavated together with the entire southern half of the unit in order to determine its origins. Numerous postholes were found on the surface of the sterile soil below. Constant volume and flotation samples were taken. Artifacts included gray ware sherds, white ware and black-on-white painted sherds, flakes, utilized flakes, a possible core flake, and ground stone.

Construction
Dense concentration of burned and unburned rock. Rocks continued to be found throughout the first stratum but were sparse in the second. Rocks were more densely concentrated in the south half than in the north half. Their average length was 5 cm, but some were up to 20 cm long.
