Pit: not further specified (Feature 15) Top of page
General description
Extramural posthole refilled with midden deposit.
Use history
Extramural posthole associated with a robust stockade to the west of Structure 205-226. The posthole eventually refilled with midden deposits.
Associated features
PNS 16, Postholes 1-14.
Excavation procedure
Feature 15 appeared to be a posthole at first, so it was excavated as a whole study unit in a full cut rather than bisected. After excavation, the feature was revealed to be a pit rather than a posthole. One two-liter flotation sample was collected from the fill; the rest was screened with 1/8" mesh.
Portion excavated
The entire feature was excavated.
Horizontal location
Feature is located in the northeast corner of the 2-x2-m unit 1366.5N 471.5E, directly east of PNS 16.
Vertical location
Surface 1.
Construction
A pit was dug into the preoccupational deposit. The shallow nature of the pit suggests that it was probably not used for storage but rather in association with some type of domestic activity.
