General description
Feature 1 is a large but shallow extramural pit feature east of Pithouse 312-324.
Use history
Feature 1 is a pit feature that was probably used during activities associated with Structure 312. It may be a resting place for a basket, olla, or metate. After the abandonment of Structure 312, it was filled with roof fall via natural processes.
Associated features
None.
Excavation procedure
The south half of the pit feature was excavated in a full cut with a trowel and was sprayed with water frequently during excavation to loosen the dirt and bring out contrasts in soil color. A two-liter flotation sample (PL 2) was saved from the south half; the rest of the fill was screened with 1/8" mesh. The north half of the feature was also excavated in a full cut with a trowel and wetted occasionally. A pollen sample (PL 3) was collected from near the bottom of the fill in the north half, and the rest of the fill was screened with 1/8" mesh. Four flakes and two gray ware sherds were recovered from the fill.
Portion excavated
The entire feature was excavated.
