Nonstructure 8.3-N, extramural surface

Features

Wall: other (Feature 2) Top of page
General description
Masonry retaining wall.
Use history
This wall appears to have been built as a retaining feature for a kiva (Structure 4)/roomblock complex. The wall was built after secondary refuse was deposited in this area. The refuse is believed to have originated from activities that took place in the kiva and its assocaited buildings and open space. If this is the case, the wall was built after the kiva was in use. One reason why the wall may have been built later than the kiva was because erosion control became a necessity. Another possibility is that the refuse that rests underneath the wall came from activities that predate the use of the kiva.
