Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database.
Horizontal location
Between Pilasters 1 and 2 (Features 1 and 2, respectively).

Construction
The back wall of the bench, which is also the upper lining wall of the kiva, is constructed of semicoursed masonry; the stones in this wall are of various sizes. The side walls of the bench are formed by Pilasters 1 and 2, but the side of Pilaster 2 that defines the bench had collapsed. The field documentation is unclear: The back wall is described as extending about 30 cm below the bench surface, which would suggest that the wall was built first, then the bench was built up against it, followed by the construction of Pilasters 1 and 2. However, the documentation also states that the back wall abuts Pilaster 1 and probably Pilaster 2, which suggests that the bench was built first, followed by the pilasters and then the back wall. Most of the bench surface is missing; the small portion that remained was not described.

Floor-level ventilation system.
Use history
Provided ventilation.
Associated features
Deflector (Feature 25) and hearth (Feature 17).
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database. The vertical shaft was excavated as Stratum 1; the horizontal tunnel was excavated as Stratum 2.
Horizontal location
South end of kiva, along the kiva main axis, more-or-less bisecting Bench 6 (Feature 12, southern recess).
Vertical location
Extends from modern ground surface to floor (Surface 2) of kiva.
Construction
Vent tunnel: The horizontal tunnel was built by removing an area of bedrock west of a natural crack. The east wall is of single-stone-wide masonry, consisting of unmodified blocks on top of bedrock, except at the opening into the main chamber, where pecked cornerstones were used. Construction of the west wall probably involved the removal of some bedrock, then the building of a wall (single-stone-wide). Again, unmodified blocks were used in construction, except for pecked cornerstones at the opening of the tunnel into the main chamber (see Database Photo 1945). The floor of the tunnel is heavily modified bedrock (an estimated 0.17 cubic meters of bedrock was removed). The ceiling is spanned by shakes (charred by roof burning?), which in turn are covered with daub, then packed dirt, to form the surface of the overlying southern recess (Bench 6). There is a stone lintel at the tunnel opening into the main chamber; three beams support the south wall of the southern recess. Vent shaft: The vertical shaft is masonry-lined and founded on bedrock.

General description
Masonry bin constructed on the surface of the southern recess.
Use history
This bin was added to the southern recess after the kiva had been used for some unknown period of time (plaster on the southern recess wall continues behind the bin wall). Possibly originally used for storage (corn crib?). Later, the bin was partly filled with roof fall and wall plaster, then was reused for storage(?). It eventually became the location of an animal nest, which was charred when the main chamber roof was burned.
Associated features
Bench 6, southern recess (Feature 12), and possibly the metate bin (Feature 16).
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database.
Horizontal location
Southwest corner of southern recess (Bench 6, Feature 12).
Vertical location
Surface of southern recess (Bench 6, Feature 12).
Construction
An L-shaped wall was built directly on the surface of Bench 6. The north and east sides of the bin are irregular masonry (sandstone of varying sizes and shapes in tan/orange mortar). The west and south sides are formed by the walls of the southern recess (Bench 6).
Remodeling/ modification

General description
Metate bin.
Use history
Added to kiva after the last plastering of the lower lining wall. Used for grinding/mealing.
Associated features
Possibly the bin (Feature 15) in the southern recess (Feature 12).
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database.
Horizontal location
Southwest quadrant of kiva, below Bench 1 (Feature 7).
Vertical location
Kiva floor (Surface 2).
Construction
The sides of the metate bin are formed by shaped, vertical slabs set on end, forming a "box." The southwest slab is positioned against the lower lining wall of the kiva; the southeast and northeast slabs are supported by unshaped sandstone blocks (exterior); and the northwest slab originally was supported by a raised "kneeling" platform consisting of a smoothed, burned sandstone inset (the northwest slab had fallen over, however, covering the kneeling platform). A metate is set in mud at a 17 degree angle. The base of the bin is constructed of small, sooted sandstone slabs placed on either side of the metate, at the same level and angle; sooted slabs also form the feature base at the south end. The southeast and northeast vertical side slabs rest on top of the southeast floor slabs. The floor slabs were sooted before they were used in the feature.

General description
Central hearth, later intruded by two firepits (Features 19 and 20) and a human body (Feature 40, Human Remains Occurrence 22).
Use history
See Database Map 4138. Feature 17 was used for an extended time as the central hearth, and by the time it was abandoned, a layer of ash (Stratum 2) had accumulated. Later, a much smaller firepit (Feature 20, Stratum 1) was cut into part of this ash just off-center in the original hearth. Later still, a slightly larger firepit (Feature 19) was cut into the center of the hearth, removing a portion of both Feature 17 and Feature 20 fill. Feature 19 was used, then cleaned out. At some later point, a human body (Feature 40, Human Remains Occurrence 22) was placed or dumped in the Feature 17/19/20 depression (at the bottom of the cleaned-out Feature 19 and on top of what was left of Stratum 2 of Feature 17 and Stratum 1 of Feature 20). Finally, a layer of sediment washed in and covered all three pit features, plus the human remains; some building blocks were either washed or thrown in as well. This layer of postabandonment sediment constituted Stratum 1 of Feature 19 and Stratum 1 of Feature 17, although it was excavated as a single unit and provenienced as Feature 17 before Feature 19 was recognized as a separate feature. All three features presumably were used for heating, lighting, and/or cooking.
Associated features
Deflector (Feature 25), ventilation system (Feature 13), and human remains (Feature 40, Human Remains Occurrence 22). Two firepits (Features 19 and 20) were intrusive to Feature 17.
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database. Fill removed first from the southwest and northeast quadrants, then from the northwest and southeast quadrants. Feature 19 was accidentally excavated as part of Feature 17. See Feature 19 data.
Horizontal location
On kiva main axis, south of center.
Vertical location
Floor (Surface 2).
Construction
Excavated or built into subfloor deposits; extends down to bedrock. Some sandstone pieces were incorporated into the sides; the south side consists of a large sandstone block set into subfloor fill.
Remodeling/ modification
Yes. Possible modification: the north rim was raised slightly by the accumulation or addition of silty fill.

General description
Irregular pit in bench surface.
Use history
The pit was added to the kiva bench after initial bench construction. Although it is inferred to have been used for storage, the pit was left empty at abandonment.
Associated features
Possibly Bench 4 (Feature 10).
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database.
Horizontal location
Southern one-half to two-thirds of Bench 4 (Feature 10).
Vertical location
Bench surface.
Construction
Excavated into construction fill behind the lower lining wall and below Bench 4. The north and south sides are construction fill. The west side is formed by the irregular "back face" of the masonry lower lining wall. The east wall is formed by the base of the vertical slabs of the kiva upper lining wall and the faces of constructional boulders. The interior surface of the pit consists of well-prepared and smoothed adobe. The pit opening was covered with sandstone slabs, and there may have been a slab hatchway cover at the north end.

General description
Firepit, intrusive to hearth (Feature 17) and second firepit (Feature 20), and containing a human body (Feature 40, Human Remains Occurrence 22).
Deflector (Feature 25), ventilation system (Feature 13), hearth (Feature 17), firepit (Feature 20), and human remains (Feature 40, Human Remains Occurrence 22).
Excavation procedure
Feature fill was excavated as part of Stratum 1 of Feature 17 before Feature 19 was recognized as a separate feature.
Horizontal location
In central hearth (Feature 17).
Vertical location
Cut into hearth (Feature 17) and firepit (Feature 20) ash.
Construction
Excavated into hearth (Feature 17) and firepit (Feature 20) fill. Small patch of silt at base may be intentional lining or may have washed in.

General description
Small floor pit: simple sipapu.
Use history
Possible ritual feature, intentionally filled as part of use.
Associated features
None.
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database.
Horizontal location
North of central hearth, on kiva main axis, about half the distance between the hearth and the north wall.
Vertical location
Floor (Surface 2).
Construction
The bedrock on which the kiva was built was leveled with subfloor construction fill, but a shallow depression was left in the area where the sipapu was to be built. This depression was filled with floor-construction silt (PD 898, Stratum 2), then a small, straight-sided pit (8 cm diameter) was excavated into this deposit. The straight-sided pit was then filled with loamy silt (PD 896, Stratum 1).

General description
Slab deflector, found in pieces. Field maps and photos (Database Photo 1799 and black-and-white photo 1989-234-19 [field number; not digitized as of 7/14/03]) are ambiguous---not clear whether a slab "stub" remained in place. Here, it is being treated as if there was an intact, in-place stub.
Use history
Deflected air around hearth. Collapsed or knocked down after last firepit (Feature 19) use, but before the deposition of human remains (Feature 40, Human Remains Occurrence 22) in the hearth/firepit (Feature 17/Feature 19) (a fragment of the deflector was found in Feature 19, under the human bone). The presence of a fragment of this deflector beneath the remains of an individual who died a violent death and was carelessly deposited suggests that the destruction of the deflector could have occurred during the warfare event that resulted in the deaths of several individuals in this kiva suite.
Associated features
Hearth (Feature 17), ventilation system (Feature 13), and firepits (Features 19 and 20).

Opening between the kiva and the southwest corner room (Structure 1018).
Use history
Would have allowed objects to be passed between the main chamber of the kiva and the southwest corner room (Structure 1018).
Associated features
Same pass-through as Structure 1018, Feature 41.
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the "Field Data: Provenience Data" query in the multisite research database.
Horizontal location
South end of Bench 1 (Feature 7).
Vertical location
Upper lining wall of kiva; sill is flush with the bench surface.
Construction
The southeast side of the pass-through is a continuation of the west face of Pilaster 1; the northwest side is a vertical slab. The top is constructed of block masonry (double-stone), although it is possible that originally there was a wood lintel (no physical evidence, however). The sill of the pass-through is a continuation of the Bench 1 surface.
