General description
"Floor-level" doorway" or "gateway" in the site-enclosing wall.
Use history
Provided access between the area outside the site-enclosing wall and the northwest part of the central plaza. One edge of the doorway or the other might represent a temporary terminus of the site-enclosing wall. The doorway was remodeling after a substantial amount of sediment was deposited naturally in the opening; this remodeling reduced the size of the doorway.
Associated features
None.
Excavation procedure
Excavated as part of test pit in Nonstructure 201, before it was recognized as a feature. Therefore, fill and contents were not provenienced as part of the doorway. PD 635 refers only to the presence of the doorway, not to any materials.
Horizontal location
Northwest area of test pit; in site-enclosing wall, between the south end of Architectural Block 100 and the north end of Architectural Block 200.
Vertical location
Originally built on bedrock (Surface 2); remodeled doorway built on top of washed-in sediments (Surface 1) on top of bedrock.
Construction
Original doorway was constructed of masonry resting on bedrock (Surface 2). It is unknown whether the feature had masonry across the top or was simply a gap in the site-enclosing wall.
Remodeling/ modification
Yes. Remodeled by the addition of a stack of blocks on each side of the doorway interior; these blocks rested on a layer of sediment that had washed into the original doorway (Surface 1), thus substantially reducing the height of the original feature.
