Bedrock feature (Feature 6) Top of page
General description
Eight ground and pecked marks on bedrock boulder surface, south end.
Use history
The two narrow and shallow grooves could have been used to manufacture or sharpen bone awls (bone awls were found on courtyard surface, near Feature 6). The sizes and shapes of the four other grooves suggest that they could have been used to manufacture or sharpen stone axes. The function of the two pecked depressions is unknown. Any or all of the marks could have been added to the bedrock at any time, including before, during, or after the construction of Kiva Suite 501.
Associated features
Possibly Nonstructure 513, Feature 9 (bedrock feature).
Excavation procedure
Feature was exposed, not excavated.
Portion excavated
All exposed, none excavated.
Horizontal location
West end of courtyard, on bedrock boulder just outside Structures 503 and 504.
Vertical location
On top of bedrock boulder, approximately 70 cm above the courtyard surface (Surface 1).
Construction
Two pecked depressions, two narrow and shallow ground grooves, and four "other grooves" in bedrock boulder surface. Dimensions (length x width x depth) of individual marks (cm): Pecked depressions = 10 x 10 x 4, 10 x 8 x 1. Narrow, shallow grooves = 8 x 0.5 x 1, 11 x 0.5 x 0.5. Other grooves = 14 x 4 x 0.5, 20 x 3 x 1, 20 x 5 x 2, 20 x 4 x 1.

Bedrock feature (Feature 7) Top of page
General description
Thirty-three ground and pecked marks on bedrock boulder surface.
Use history
The five narrow and shallow grooves could have been used to manufacture or sharpen bone awls. The sizes and shapes of the 13 "other grooves" suggest that they could have been used to manufacture or sharpen stone axes. The function of the 15 pecked depressions is unknown. At least two marks ("other grooves") predate the construction of Structure 508, although any/all of the remaining marks could have continued in use after room construction.
Associated features
Possibly Structure 503, Feature 7 (bedrock feature).
Excavation procedure
Feature was exposed, not excavated.
Portion excavated
All exposed, none excavated.
Horizontal location
Northwest corner of courtyard, on a boulder surface just outside Structure 503 and 508, and extending under the south wall of Structure 508 into southwest quarter of that room.
Vertical location
On top of bedrock boulder, approximately 83 cm above the courtyard surface (Surface 1) and 0.5 to 1.5 meters above the floor of Structure 508.
Construction
Portion of feature that falls outside Structure 508: 15 pecked depressions, five narrow and shallow grooves (ground into bedrock), nine "other grooves" (also made by grinding) in bedrock boulder surface. Dimensions (length x width x depth) of individual marks (cm): Pecked depressions = 3 x 3 x 1.5, 0.5 x 0.5 x 1, 5 x 5 x 1.5, 4.5 x 4.5 x 2.5, 4.5 x 4.5 x 2.5, 5 x 5 x 2.5, 2 x 2 x 0.5, 3 x 3 x 1.5, 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.5, 2 x 2 x 0.5, 2 x 2 x 0.5, 2 x 2 x 0.5, 3 x 3 x 2, 2 x 2 x 0.5, 2 x 2 x 1. Narrow, shallow grooves = 13 x 1 x 0.5, 10 x 1 x 1,10 x 1 x 0.5, not recorded, 7 x 1 x 1.5. "Other grooves" = 14 x 9 x 2, 19 x 10 x 3, 12 x 11 x 3, 17 x 12 x 2, 15 x 8 x 1.5, 13 x 9 x 1, 16 x 5.5 x 0.5, 17 x 2 x 1.5, 23 x 2 x 1.5. Portion of feature that falls inside Structure 508: Four "other grooves" ground into boulder surface. Dimensions (length x width x depth) of individual marks (cm) = 12 x 9 x 1, 13 x 10 x 0.5, 13 x 10 x 1.5, 15 x 9 x 1.
Remodeling/ modification
Yes. The south wall of Structure 508 was built on top of (overlapping) this cluster of modifications. One mark from the Structure 508 side and one from the courtyard side extend under the wall.
Thermal alteration
