Nonstructure 1.17-N, midden

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom.

Specific Location

East of Structure 1, a tested kiva, and west of Structure 9, another tested kiva. Upper fill of Segment 8 (EU 39); below Nonstructure 1.16-N and above Nonstructures 1.18-N and 1.19-N.

Selection Criteria

Part of Nonstructure 1-N testing; see Nonstructure 1-N and associated EU for description and explanation of testing strategy.

Use

Thin refuse deposit from a kiva (Structure 1) and its associated roomblock west of this study unit, and/or another kiva (Structure 9) to the east; this interpretation is based on the close proximity of the structures to this study unit.

Abandonment

A surface was constructed on top of this deposit.

Postabandonment Process

Not applicable.

Dating of Midden

Pottery recovered from this refuse dates between A.D. 900 and 1300. The stratigraphic position of this deposit suggests that this refuse accumulated before a surface (Nonstructure 1.16-N, Surface 1) and wall (Feature10) were constructed, but after another refuse deposit was discarded (Nonstructure 1.18-N), and an extramural surface (Nonstructure 1.19-N) was used.
