Nonstructure 1.18-N, midden

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom.

Specific Location

East of Structure 1, a tested kiva, and west of Structure 9, another tested kiva. Lower fill of Segment 8 (EU 39); below Nonstructures 1.16-N and 1.17-N and above Nonstructure 1.19-N.

Selection Criteria

Part of Nonstructure 1-N testing; see Nonstructure 1-N and associated EU for description and explanation of testing strategy.

Use

Based on heterogeneity of fill, this study unit contains multiple deposits that were discarded over time; refuse may have originated from a kiva (Structure 1) and its associated roomblock west of this study unit and/or another kiva (Structure 9) east of this study unit; this interpretation is based upon the close proximity of the structures to this study unit.

Abandonment

Covered by another refuse deposit.

Postabandonment Process

Refuse disturbed by rodents during postabandonment times.

Dating of Midden

One noncutting tree-ring date of A.D. 1157+vv and pottery dating from the Pueblo III period were recovered from this study unit, and indicate this trash was discarded between A.D. 1150 and 1300. The stratigraphic position of this refuse indicates that the trash was discarded after an extramural surface (Nonstructure 1.19-N) was used but before another thin refuse deposit (Nonstructure 1.17-N) accumulated and another extramural surface was constructed (Nonstructure 1.16-N, Surface 1, Feature 10).
