Nonstructure 2.1-N, midden

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Northeast quadrant of site, within rim complex on canyon rim.

Specific Location

Adjacent to and north of Structure 17, a D-shaped building; rests above Nonstructures 2.2-N and 2.3-N.

Selection Criteria

Part of Nonstructure 2-N testing; see Nonstructure 2-N and associated EU's for description and explanation of testing strategy.

Use

Interpreted as secondary refuse because of the high quantity of artifacts and charred vegetal matter, however, fill is heavily disturbed and mixed with structural collapse materials; this is believed to be a redeposited deposit rather than an in situ deposit; redeposition occurred during postoccupational times because fill rests near modern ground surface and above a section of a D-shaped building wall and thick structural collapse deposits; two shallow depressions, visible at modern ground surface, are present in the adjacent D-shaped building (Structure 17), and are believed to be looter's pits; it is likely that this deposit is the backdirt from the looting activities that took place in the D-shaped building; if this is the case, this deposit orginated from the D-shaped building.

Abandonment

No data.

Postabandonment Process

Deposit is believed to have been redeposited by looting activities (see Study Unit Use) during recent times; also disturbed by extensive rodent activity after looting occurred.

Dating of Midden

Pottery data indicate deposition occurred during the Pueblo III period.

Excavation Details for Excavation Units

In order by excavation unit number.

Excavation Unit

21

Location

1-x-1 meter grid unit 474N 522E.
Northeast corner of pueblo, rim complex.
North of and adjacent to Structure 17, a D-shaped building.

Selection Criteria

Random. First unit selected by random means from Nonstructure 2, Sampling Stratum 2.

Excavation Strategy

Strata subdivided into arbitrary levels. After a wall was encountered in the middle of this unit, another 1-x-1-m unit (1-x-1-m 475N 522E) was opened to the north so that excavations could continue. The north unit was combined with this unit after the upper fill had been removed and excavated a

Excavation Unit

22

Location

1-x-1 meter grid unit 475N 522E.
Northeast corner of pueblo, rim complex.
Immediately north of a D-shaped building (Structure 17) and 1-x-1-m unit 474N 522E.

Selection Criteria

Judgmental. This unit was opened after a wall was encountered in 1-x-1-m 474N 522E. The wall took up half of the square making it difficult to continue excavation without expanding to the north.

Excavation Strategy

Strata subdivided into arbitrary levels.

Unit Ends at

Fill continued. Fill below this unit was excavated with fill from 1-x-1-m 474N 522E.
