Nonstructure 3.1-N, midden

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Upper west side. South of cliff face on steep talus slope and south of a cluster of buildings that includes Structure 7 (a tested kiva).

Specific Location

Upper fill of 1-x-1-m 389N 397E (EU 9). Most of fill in 1-x-1-m 390N 406E (EU 10). Upper half of 1-x-1-m 403N 415E (EU 11). Rests below Nonstructures 3.2-N and 3.3-N in 1-x-1-m 390N 406E (EU 10).

Selection Criteria

Part of Nonstructure 3-N testing; see Nonstructure 3-N and associated EU's for description and explanation of testing strategy.

Use

Refuse that has been naturally redeposited and includes natural deposits; this redeposition occurred after occupation; based on topography, this refuse is believed to have originated from the structures upslope and north of this study unit, one of these structures is Structure 7, a tested kiva.

Abandonment

Not applicable.

Postabandonment Process

See Use.

Dating of Midden

Pottery data suggests refuse was discarded during late Pueblo II and Pueblo III times. Mancos Black-on-white is the most predominant type. Because this refuse has been redeposited, it may have come from multiple sources and may include materials that were discarded at different times.

Excavation Details for Excavation Units

In order by excavation unit number.

Excavation Unit

9

Location

1-x-1 meter grid unit 389N 397E.
West of main drainage; upper west side on steep talus slope.
South end of Nonstructure 3; roughly 1.5 m south of possible retaining wall.

Selection Criteria

Random. Fourth randomly-selected unit for excavation in NST 3.

Excavation Strategy

Strata subdivided into arbitrary levels.

Unit Ends at

Other. Due to a large boulder in the unit and the dangerous situation that undercutting the boulder presented, excavation ended after a small portion of Stratum B was removed. It is unclear if Stratum B is undisturbed native sediment or fill.
