Nonstructure 4.1-N, midden

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom. Immediately south of Nonstructure 1-N and southwest of Structure 1 (a tested kiva).

Specific Location

Upper fill of 1-x-1-m 291N 470E (EU 1), 1-x-1-m 293N 466E (EU 2), 1-x-1-m 295N 462E (EU 3), 1-x-1-m 295N 467E(EU 4), and Segment 2 (EU 52). Rests above Nonstructures 4.2-N, 4.5-N, and 4.7-N. Nonstructure 4.6-N is a surface within this deposit.

Selection Criteria

Part of Nonstructure 4-N testing; see Nonstructure 4-N and associated EU's for description and explanation of testing strategy.

Use

Refuse that has been naturally redeposited; mixed with natural deposits; most of this redeposition is believed to have occurred after occupation, however, some of the material was deposited during occupation because a wall was built when this deposit accumulated; refuse could have come from multiple sources, including the kiva unit north of this study unit ( Structure 1) and Nonstructure 1-N area.

Abandonment

Not applicable.

Postabandonment Process

See Use.

Dating of Midden

Pottery data indicate this refuse was deposited during the Pueblo III period; the few formal pottery types found date from the late Pueblo III period. Because this refuse has been redeposited naturally, it may have come from multiple sources and may include materials that were discarded at different times.
