Nonstructure 4.3-N, midden
About this Nonstructure
General Location
Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom. Immediately south of Nonstructure 1-N and southwest of Structure 1 (a tested kiva).
Specific Location
Upper fill of Segment 1 (EU 51); rests above Nonstructures 4.2-N and 4.4-N.
Selection Criteria
Part of Nonstructure 4-N testing; see Nonstructure 4-N and associated EU for description and explanation of testing strategy.
Use
Refuse discarded from kiva unit to the north, which includes Structure 1, a tested kiva; probably same deposit as Nonstructure 4.5-N.
Abandonment
Not applicable.
Postabandonment Process

Dating of Midden
Pottery data indicate refuse was deposited during late Pueblo II and Pueblo III times. The two most predominant formal white ware types are McElmo Black-on-white and Mancos Black-on-white. Small quantities of Mesa Verde Black-on-white and Mesa Verde Corrugated Gray sherds were also present. Based on stratigraphic position, this refuse postdates an extramural surface (Nonstructure 4.4-N) and a cultural deposit (Nonstructure 4.2-N).
