Nonstructure 5.10-N, midden
About this Nonstructure
General Location
Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom. East-southeast of Nonstructure 1-N.
Specific Location
Upper half of 1-x-1-m 329N 510E (EU 8), below Nonstructure 5.9-N.
Selection Criteria
Part of Nonstructure 5-N testing; see Nonstructure 5-N and associated EU for description and explanation of testing strategy.
Use
Thick refuse deposit that could have originated from the kiva units north of this study unit and the nearby towers resting on top of boulders.
Abandonment
Covered initially by a thin eolian deposit and later by a secondary refuse deposit.
Postabandonment Process
Not applicable.
Dating of Midden
Based on pottery data, this refuse was discarded in late Pueblo II and Pueblo III times; the most predominant formal white ware types are Mesa Verde Black-on-white and McElmo Black-on-white, followed closely by Mancos Black-on-white. Based on stratigraphic position, this is the earliest refuse deposit in 1-x-1-m 329N 510E and it predates another refuse deposit, Nonstructure 5.9-N.
