Nonstructure 102, midden

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

South part of the site.

Specific Location

South of the roomblock in Architectural Block 100.

Selection Criteria

To sample midden in this architectural block.

Use

Some strata in this midden appear to be continuous with Nonstructure 103 (midden). Area was used heavily for the deposition of refuse. Most refuse was probably deposited by the residents of the roomblock in this architectural block, but some artifacts could predate this block.

Abandonment

Postabandonment Process

Upper strata mixed by recent looting activity.

Dating of Midden

Midden contains sherds from pottery that was produced in both the late Pueblo II and the Pueblo III periods. However, Mesa Verde Black-on-white sherds were found in an undisturbed stratum that rested within 15 cm above undisturbed native sediment, which indicates that most of the cultural material in this midden was deposited after A.D. 1180. Also, there is no "clean" sediment anywhere in the stratigraphic sequence of this excavation pit, so no occupational hiatus is indicated.
