South part of the site.

Specific Location

South of the roomblock in Architectural Block 200.

Selection Criteria

To sample possible midden area in Architectural Block 200.

Use

Area used for the deposition of refuse, probably by the inhabitants of Architectural Block 200.

Abandonment

Midden was probably abandoned when occupation of this area of the village ended.

Postabandonment Process

Uppermost portion of the midden was mixed by recent looting activities.

Dating of Midden

This midden contains both late Pueblo II sherds and Pueblo III sherds. The presence of Pueblo III White Painted sherds in the lowermost stratum indicates that people began depositing refuse in this area sometime after A.D. 1100. The presence of Mesa Verde Black-on-white sherds in the stratum just above the lowermost stratum indicates that this layer of refuse (and all of the refuse above it) was deposited sometime after A.D. 1180.
