Specific Location

South of the roomblock in Architectural Block 2400.

Selection Criteria

To sample the midden in this architectural block.

Use

This area was used for the deposition of a moderate amount of refuse, probably by the occupants of the nearby roomblock.

Abandonment

Abandoned when occupation of this area ended.

Postabandonment Process

Midden covered by natural deposits (aeolian/alluvial).

Dating of Midden

This 50-cm-thick midden contained both late Pueblo II and Pueblo III sherds. The presence of Pueblo III White Painted and Mesa Verde Corrugated sherds in the lowermost stratum indicates that deposition began sometime after A.D. 1100. The presence of Mesa Verde Black-on-white sherds in the uppermost stratum indicates that refuse was also deposited after A.D. 1180. No hiatus was noted in the depositional sequence, so it is tentatively inferred that deposition was more or less continuous.
