Nonstructure 404, midden

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Central part of the site.

Specific Location

Below the roomblock-associated occupation stratum in Architectural Block 400 (in 2 x 1 m unit 1029N 1003E) (EU 72).

Selection Criteria

Midden was encountered during excavations to expose the outside face of the north wall of the roomblock.

Use

This area was used for the deposition of refuse, probably by the residents of a nearby roomblock--but not the roomblock in Architectural Block 400, which postdates this deposit.

Abandonment

Abandoned prior to the construction of the roomblock Architectural Block 400.

Postabandonment Process

Covered by construction fill and the construction of Architectural Block 400.

Dating of Midden

This 60-cm-thick midden contains both late Pueblo II and Pueblo III pottery. However, the presence of Mesa Verde Black-on-white pottery in the lowermost stratum of refuse indicates that this refuse in this midden was deposited sometime after A.D. 1180.
