Surface 1 is the latest surface in courtyard; consists of bedrock in some areas (red, Dewey Bridge bedrock or yellowish, crumbly, intrusive bedrock); in other areas, it consists of a layer of sediment on top of bedrock.

This surface is decomposing sandstone bedrock in areas where there is a later, constructed surface above bedrock.
