Structure 815, aboveground kiva

CONSTRUCTION

Method and Sequence

This kiva is an aboveground stucture that was enclosed by on or more walls. Sections of walls, stone alignments, and rubble visible at modern ground surface surround the kiva on all sides, and are believed to be evidence of the enclosing walls. After the enclosing walls were built, the kiva was constructed as follows; (1) the bench-face masonry and ventilation system were built; (2) fill was added between the enclosing walls and the bench face up to the top of the bench face; (3) pilasters were constructed; (3) presumably, sections of upper lining walls were built between the pilasters; (4) adobe floor and bench surfaces were laid; (5) the kiva was roofed.
