Nonstructure 1.16-N, extramural surface

About this Nonstructure

Has Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom.

Specific Location

Near modern ground surface in Segment 8 (EU 39); rests above Nonstructures 1.17-N, 1.18-N, and 1.19-N.

Selection Criteria

Part of Nonstructure 1-N testing; see Nonstructure 1-N and associated EU's for description and explanation of testing strategy.

Use

Outdoor use surface constructed in association with an extramural wall (Feature 10).

Abandonment

Artifacts left on surface; probably abandoned as part of the canyon bottom abandonment.

Postabandonment Process

Surface covered by natural deposits and wall fall.

Dating of Construction

No construction dates. Pottery resting on the surface dates between A.D. 900 and 1300. The stratigraphic position of this surface indicates that the surface postdates two secondary refuse deposits (Nonstructures 1.17-N and 1.18-N) and an extramural surface (Nonstructure 1.19-N).

Dating of Remodeling

No evidence of remodeling.

Dating of Abandonment

Probably abandoned when the canyon bottom was abandoned, because it is one of the latest surfaces in the area.

Dating of Midden

Not applicable.

Dating of Reuse

No evidence of reuse.

Date Range

4 (A.D. 900–1280)
