Nonstructure 1.2-N, extramural surface

About this Nonstructure

Has Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom.

Specific Location

Near modern ground surface in Segment 1 (EU 32); rests above Nonstructures 1.3-N, 1.4-N, and 1.5-N and below Nonstructure 1.1-N.

Selection Criteria

Part of Nonstructure 1-N testing; see Nonstructure 1-N and associated EU for description and explanation of testing strategy.

Use

Outdoor surface associated with the construction and use of two pit features.

Abandonment

Probably abandoned as part of site abandonment.

Postabandonment Process

Surface covered by postoccupaitonal alluvial, eolian and colluvial deposits that contain redeposited secondary refuse.

Dating of Construction

Paucity of artifacts makes it difficult to assign a construction date, although two pottery sherds recovered from the subfloor constructional fill provide a date range of A.D. 900 to 1300; surface constructed late in the occupation of this area as the surface rests 10 to 14 cm below modern ground surface and multiple cultural deposits rest below it. Postdates a constructional fill deposit (Nonstructure 1.3-N), a secondary refuse deposit (Nonstructure 1.4-N), and an extramural surface (Nonstructure 1.5-N).

Dating of Remodeling

No evidence of remodeling.

Dating of Abandonment

Probably abandoned when the canyon bottom was abandoned, because this is inferred to have been one of the latest surfaces in this area.

Dating of Midden

Not applicable.

Dating of Reuse

No evidence of reuse.

Date Range

4 (A.D. 900–1280)
