Nonstructure 1.20-N, extramural surface

Features

Wall: other (Feature 7) Top of page
General description
Expediently constructed masonry wall.
Use history
Appears to have functioned as a retaining wall that prevented midden deposits from eroding downslope; base of the wall rests near the base of the secondary refuse indicating that construction began near the time that the midden began to accumulate.
Associated features
Similar to other low walls and stone alignments in Nst 1 (F-2, F-3, F-5, F-8, F-10, F-11 and F-12) and Nst 4 (F-1 and F-3); based on surface rubble this feature may be the same wall as that recorded as Nst 4, F-3.
Excavation procedure
Exposed and recorded.
Portion excavated
Portion within excavation unit.
Horizontal location
Runs along south edge of Segment 9.
Vertical location
Surface 9; base of wall rests just below the top of a secondary refuse deposit (Stratum B on Map 206); base of wall is near base of secondary refuse deposits in Nonstructure 1, Segment 9.
Construction
Stones used in construction are unshaped to minimally shaped and vary considerably in size and shape; stones placed in secondary refuse; stones may have been added as the secondary refuse accumulated rather than having been constructed in a single event; lower course is characterized by small stones and the uppermost course consists primarily of a very large stone; three courses of medium-sized stones present along west profile; wall is dry-laid and single-stone wide.

Pit: not further specified (Feature 9) Top of page
General description
Pit that may have been a posthole.
Use history
This may have been a posthole but no post was found in it; post may have been removed; pit was left empty and later filled with naturally redeposited secondary refuse; if pit originated from top of Strat C, it was constructed, used and abandoned early in the history of site occupation; if it was originated from the top of Strat B, then it was constructed, used and abandoned relatively late in the occupation of the site.
Associated features
Immediately west of this pit is another pit (F-4); if this pit originated from the top of Strat C, these two pits were built and used at relatively the same time; in addition, the two possible postholes in Seg. 1 (F-1 and F-6) may be associated.
Excavation procedure
Recorded in provenience data, which are available through the モField Data: Provenience Dataヤ query in the multisite research database. Top of feature was not detected and therefore was not excavated as part of the feature.
Portion excavated
Portion within Segment 9; pit extends into west profile.
Horizontal location
Northwest corner of Segment 9.
Vertical location
Top of feature may have originated from either the top of Stratum B on Map 206 or the top of Stratum C on Map 206; top of feature was not identified during excavation and the profile (Map 206) is inconclusive; since the fill inside the feature is most similar to Stratum A, the pit probably originated from the top of Stratum B, which is Surface 9.
Construction
Pit was probably excavated into a secondary refuse deposit (Stratum B on Map 206) and definitely excavated into a deposit that is interpreted as prehistoric ground surface when the primary occupation of the site began (stratum C on Map 206).

Naturally redeposited secondary refuse; more similar to Strat A than Strat B (see Map 206) because it contains fewer and smaller inclusions
