Nonstructure 1.6-N, extramural surface

Features

Wall: other (Feature 2) Top of page
General description
Rough alignment of stones; may have been part of a retaining wall.
Use history
If this is a wall, it may have been part of a retaining wall constructed to control erosion; it was built late in the site occupation as it rests in fill well above sterile; characteristics that support the wall interpretation are: 1) stones are at the same vertical level; 2) large stones are lying roughly horizontal; 3) large stones rest adjacent to one another, with the ends touching; 4) there is no apparent source of wall fall nearby; characteristics that do not support this being a wall are: 1) the stones lie in fill; 2) no coursing; 3) the stones north of the large stone alignemnt are jumbled; more testing would be necessary to confirm if this is a constructed feature.
Associated features
Similar to other low walls and stone alignments in Nst 1 (F-3, F-5, F-7, F-8, F-10, F-11 and F-12) and Nst 4 (F-1 and F-3).
Excavation procedure
Exposed and documented.
Portion excavated
Portion within excavation unit.
Horizontal location
Northern two-thirds of Segment 3.
Vertical location
Rests on a use surface (Surface 5) in fill; fill is interpreted as secondary refuse (Stratum 1 Level 1in PD record, Stratum A on Map 200); base of feature is 10 to 20 cm below MGS.
Construction
Stones were placed in fill; they are roughly aligned and only one course high.
