Nonstructure 9.2-N, extramural surface

Features

Wall: other (Feature 2) Top of page
General description
Check dam wall.
Use history
This wall is believed to have slowed down water, rather than containing it. The absence of constructional sediment behind this wall made it impossible for the wall to contain water for any significant period of time. Low velocity alluvial events were responsible for depositing sediments behind the wall during occupation, but there is no evidence in the stratigraphic record (no evidence of fining sequences, settling) of standing water behind the wall. Wall may have also helped to control erosion. It is also possible that sediment accumulated behind the wall so that gardening/farming could take place in the drainage (compare against pollen analysis). This wall was built after F-1, another check dam wall was constructed and in use. It was also constructed after a lot of natural deposits had accumulated behind F-1. Based on the stratigraphic record, no attempt was made to remove the sediments down to bedrock before this wall was built. The close proximity of this wall to F-1, the deteriorated condition of F-1, and the building sequence of the two walls, suggests this wall may have been built to replace F-1 or aid in controlling water, sediment, and/or erosion.
Associated features
F-1, another check dam wall located immediately to the south.
Excavation procedure
Not excavated; only exposed and documented.
Portion excavated
Portion within Nonstructure 9, Segment 1.
Horizontal location
North of Feature 1, another check dam wall; south-central area of Nonstructure 9, Segment 1.
Vertical location
Rests on Surface 2, which is the top of a natural deposit that accumulated during occupation (Stratum E on Map 185).
Construction
Wall built on natural sediment that accumulated during occupation; wall consists of unshaped stones that were stacked on top of one another in a roughly coursed manner; wall was dry-laid and is single-stone wide; see Masonry forms 302 and 303 for architectural details.
