Selection Criteria

To sample midden associated with this architectural block.

Use

This area was used for the deposition of refuse, probably by the residents of the nearby roomblock; some refuse could predate the visible roomblock.

Abandonment

Abandoned when occupation of this area ended.

Postabandonment Process

All but the lowermost deposits were mixed by recent looting activities.

Dating of Midden

This 70-cm-thick midden contains Pueblo III White Painted sherds in the lowermost (and undisturbed) portion of this midden, indicating that earliest refuse was deposited here sometime after A.D. 1100. The presence of Mesa Verde Black-on-white sherds in the churned deposits indicates that this midden was probably deposited after A.D. 1180.
